B. Evaluation: forms and conventions

The genre of my music magazine is dance. For a dance magazine I think it is expected to be bright and colourful with some class that can also relate to the readers. An existing magazine like mine is RAVE, (pictured below) which has the same sort of music likeness. I tried to make my magazine stand out from others by creating mine with a bright cover that will noticed. With my magazine I tried to create something that there wasn’t many of in the market; a dance magazine with style that would appeal to the music tastes of people who were into more upbeat music. I tried to create it to be clean cut and smart by sticking to a colour scheme. It follows most other magazine buy having a mast head, large font, a large centre picture, tagline and bright and bold text.

To start with I created my cover page, with the name, I tried to invent a name that stood out and that people would recognise with dancing or with fun I though “PUMP IT!” Fit really well. I made the name bright pink to stand out and be noticeable. Then for the large centre picture I took a photograph of a young stylish women who held her hand in a sort of dance way that would show who my magazine is aimed at. The colour scheme I went for with my magazine was blue, bright pink, white and yellow, which I kept throughout each of my pieces of work, I made up articles that sounded like something, really good and couldn’t be missed. The price of my magazine is £2.75 I though that this price was not to cheap but then it is affordable. My cover page is very bright, a lot brighter than other music magazines around but it really fits in well with how I wanted dance people to see it and want to read it as it’s just how some dance can be. The way I used my text on this page was with capitals and drop capital, this could be seen as stylish and represents youth in the way that it’s not that smart that it can’t be read by youth but shows that my music magazine is well worth reading.

Next I developed my contents page, I wanted this to be very stylish also to fit with my music magazine. I kept with the colour scheme. I wanted something different with this page though so I decided on creating Polaroid photographs to show that it’s a smart magazine but stylish in many ways, the photographs look like they have been stuck there in the way of design, with writing on to like describe where this article is. I decided to write a piece from the editor to personalise the magazine, and to explain what the magazine wanted to do and have for the readers to enjoy. With the list of articles in the magazine I decided that the main articles should stand out and be in a different colour than the other articles are. I thought that my contents page wasn’t finished with just that so I inserted a pink box at the bottom of the page, to show where the readers could also find out more about the magazine if they wanted more news “Get in touch - visit us at - pumpitlouder.co.uk” This personalised my magazine further by really asking if they want to tell us how we can improve or how much they like the magazine.
Lastly I created my double page spread, again it fits in with the colour scheme of the magazine. I decided to have a picture of a young attractive male that relates to the youthful readers. I used a graphic above the black and white picture to show that our magazine has a serious side with the black and white but then also a random and fun side just like dance. I didn’t want to make the article too big to read so the readers got bored of it, but just a certain size that was readable so they could find out the latest news about the new artist. The introduction of this article is bright pink and really stands out from the page, I made this part chatty and talkative to fit in with the rest of the magazine. The top right hand bar stating what the magazines name is links in with the rest of the magazine as the contents page also has this too. With my double page spread I used left aligned writing, with equally spaced out gutters.
